Owen Eugene Skelley Memorial Scholarship

* Open only to students of Liberty High School in North Liberty, Iowa

What is The Owen Eugene Skelley Memorial Scholarship?

As a member of the Class of 2024 at Liberty High School, Owen Eugene Skelley was full of life, love, and generosity. He was always concerned about others and went out of his way to show compassion and build others up.

Sports were very important to Owen, especially baseball and football, but what was more important to him was treating others with compassion & kindness. He was a genuine friend to so many!

On March 3, 2022 Owen passed away after a long battle with mental illness. The Big O Foundation was created in memory of Owen, and to raise awareness about mental health. Owen impacted many people in his short time on earth, and we want to continue to live out Owen’s legacy. The foundation is driven to make a positive impact and help end the stigma around mental illness. You can learn more about Owen and The Big O Foundation at: thebigofoundation.org

In honor of Owen’s life, The Big O Foundation has two scholarships available to graduating Liberty seniors who exhibit Owen’s kind and giving spirit and/or have been champions for mental health awareness.

In addition to this application, students must submit one (1) letter of recommendation from a teacher, coach, or club advisor. Funds will be awarded for two scholarships in the amount of $1,000 each. Eligible students can be pursuing a 2-year or 4-year degree or attending a technical college. Applications are due to the Liberty Counseling Office by April 14, 2023 (may be dropped off or emailed to libertyscholarships@iowacityschools.org).
